Indigenymy: Toponym Cross-Language Hypermap

The default toponyms view. Each coloured dot is an Indigenous place name in the language shown in the legend. Three layers, top to bottom: high-accuracy Toponyms by Language, displaced Awayonyms (high-accuracy names plotted outside their core language area), and low-accuracy Sleeping Toponyms (older soundalike transcriptions). Tap or click any point for the name's meaning, source, and Glottolog link.

Count: 7,080 toponyms across 35 languages, from 115 publicly available sources.

Orthographies: Most use a derivative of the Americanist phonetic alphabet, the BC Indian Languages Project orthography, or community-developed systems like SENĆOŦEN. FirstVoices is the best place to learn pronunciation.

Tip: Open the legend (top left of the map) to filter by language or layer.
